A Second Heart

"Your memory beats inside me like a second heart."

Happy Valentine's Day, my sweet Heavenly Valentine! ❤️

My mom wrote this beautiful poem for me in Lily's honor for Valentine's Day 2011:

GOODBYE LILY KATHERINE
By Ginny Allen, Lily's Grandmother

In my daughter's womb, grew her gift from above.
We readied a room, for her wee one to love.
On our merry way rejoicing, to a glorious celebration.
Expecting our flower’s arriving, Jesus' tears hid the sun.

God had bid her go before we said, "Hello."

Goodbye budding life. Goodbye shattered dreams.

Goodbye precious babe lying still in our arms.

Goodbye sweet nursing and soft cries.
Goodbye to rocking and lullabies.

Goodbye wonder and curiosity.
Goodbye to kissing who you would be.

Goodbye to hearing "grandma" and "mama" too.
Goodbye to discovering wonderful you.

Goodbye snuggling you to our hearts.
Goodbye tore our lives apart.

Goodbye to our pure Lily Katherine.
Goodbye ‘til we meet you in Heaven.

Single Ladies: Let's Turn Outward on Valentine's Day

So... Valentine's Day is just around the corner and let's be honest, for singles it can be a day that makes you all 😩 ... The hearts, the cards, and the sappy romance in the air can be a huge (pink and red) reminder that you are oh so alone.

What if instead of sulking on this day, and instead of begrudgingly referring to it as "single's awareness day," what if we took it as an opportunity to encourage the single girlfriends in our lives? What if we sent cards (or flowers 💐  or chocolates 🍫 ) to these friends (who likely otherwise won't receive anything), reminding them of God's love, sovereignty, and goodness... cards that encourage them to not grow weary, to trust that God is in control and not to settle. 💌

What if instead of sitting at home drowning our feelings in a gallon of ice-cream 🍦 on the couch, we went out with some of our single girlfriends? Not as a protest of Valentine's Day, but as a way to get out and enjoy life and have some fun... go get your nails done, get dressed up (always a good idea) 👗 👛 👠 and go out to a classy restaurant. Go on an adventure, however that might look.

Just don't let resentment and bitterness take root. Do what ya gotta do to combat it and fight for joy and trust. And to remember that you aren't the only one who struggles. Maybe we can come alongside our single sisters and help them learn to be content in Christ as we do. Even show love to the widows you know, spoil the kiddos you know, your mom, etc. Turn outward instead of inward. ❤️ 💗

Do you have any ideas or thoughts to add?

Red-Velvet for Her Great-Granddaughter

My grandmother "Bumma" told me last week that when she and some other family members went to a restaurant recently, she ordered a red-velvet milkshake, which was a special for February with Valentine's Day! I found it so sweet that she was excited to tell me this, that others think of Lily with red-velvet, and that she ordered it in honor of her first-born great-granddaughter. I want to write this so when I look back at my blog years from now, I know it'll make me smile. It's also amazing that there are literally more red-velvet things than I could imagine! Always new things to try. :) #RedVelvetforLily ❤️

For My Single Sistahs on Valentine's Day

This February, I finally got around to doing something I've been wanting to do for years (I hope to make it an annual thing).

Those who are single know that Valentine's Day can be a reminder of the painful aspects of singleness, so I wanted to send some Valentine cads to some of my dear single sistahs who are in their late 20s and early 30s so 1) they'd have something tangible when they won't be receiving any flowers, gifts, or jewelry and 2) to be reminded of how much God loves them and how they are honoring Him in waiting and trusting His will is best. 💌📬

We all need some encouragement in life, don't we? Especially from others who "get it" and let us know we aren't alone. Each of us have those in our lives we can reach out to with the love of Christ, if only we're willing to look and be open.

If you're in a prolonged unwanted season of singleness, this is for you too. God can be trusted. It's not an accident that you are single. You aren't alone. 💕❤️💕

"Valentine's Day is not single awareness day. It's "I refused to settle awareness day and I trust God." The end." 👊🏼🔥 -Heather Lindsey

"Give thanks to the God of Heaven, for His steadfast love endures forever." -Psalm 136:26

3:16 Valentine

A few people sent me this photo last year on Valentine's Day. It is special for multiple reasons: one being that Lily's birthday is 3:16 and this verse reminds me of her and the promise of everlasting life God spoke through her life and chosen birthday. And the other being that I had a Valentine's baby shower. ❤️

Valentine's Day Decor ❤️

I was able to decorate my girl's spot for Valentine's Day over the weekend. She's my forever Valentine. 🌹💕💕❤️💕💕🌹

A balloon and a giant rose!

A Valentine's teddy bear

A Valentine's flag from Etsy

A Valentine's sunset! The Lord painted this for us in the sky on the evening we were there to decorate and visit Lily's spot. So special. :)

Sprinkled Throughout My Days

This past Saturday (the day we had Lily's baby shower 6 years ago, also on a Saturday), my mom, sister-in-law, and I had a fun "Galentine's Day" = the Allen gals celebrating Valentine's Day. ;)

Even the little Allen gals were with us, Lily in my heart and my niece in Kala's belly. We were just missing my sister, Emma.

We went to a neat place in Raleigh called Lafayette Village, which is made to look like Europe. We had a delightful dinner by the fireside at a place called Simply Crepes, then we went to a fun coffee shop, and got glazed donuts for dessert.

It was good for me to get out and do something fun on a day full of memories. They are happy memories, yes, but still a reminder that my girl isn't here. I got a latte and they did a heart on top, which made me smile thinking of my little Valentine and how reminders of her are sprinkled throughout my days. I don't have to look far to know she is with me. Always. :)

Valentine's Day and John 3:16

On Valentine's Day, three different people shared this picture with me:

I thought it was special they thought to send it to me, because it speaks to me in many ways.

For one, Lily's birthday is March 16 (3:16), like John 3:16. God spoke His promise of everlasting life through choosing her birthday to be on that date. The Scripture reference is on the back of her stone (see photo below), with a butterfly, symbolizing her new life in the womb being a symbol and reflection of the new life God was working within me... as well as a symbol of her new life with Jesus right now, and the new life we can all have in Him, if we believe in Him, like John 3:16 says.

Also, I had a Valentine's-themed baby shower, so Valentine's Day also reminds me of Lily because of that. Those two things together makes the picture extra special. Lily is my forever Heavenly Valentine. :)

On another note, speaking of March 16, Lily's birthday is a month from today. It's approaching quickly.

One Month and Valentine's Memories

Lily Katherine's 4th Birthday in Heaven is a month from today... I can't believe how quickly it is approaching. I am ready to plan a beautiful celebration in honor of her LIFE. March 16 is the one day a year that is totally and completely hers. And it always will be to me. March 16 is etched onto the heart of those who know and love my girl as a day that reminds us she was really and truly here.

On another note, Valentine's Day made me think of my sweet Heavenly Valentine and how four years ago on February 13th, I was celebrating her LIFE with my Valentine's-themed baby shower. Now the holiday will forever make me think of her and those special memories. It's one of those "days nobody remembers," as I've written about before

I really wish I could decorate her headstone/special spot for Valentine's Day. I had wanted to send some decorations to my friend Elise to do it for me, as she often does, but I didn't get around to it this year. Hopefully I can at least decorate her spot for her birthday. It's so hard living hours away and not being able to go as often as I'd like.

My Heavenly Valentines

My gorgeous Valentine's Sand Hearts made by Catherine from The Sacred Seashore

I love Valentine's Day. :) I know many people say it's too commercialized and think it's a stupid holiday, but I don't care. I enjoy most all holidays and like any excuse to celebrate LIFE! I love a day that's all about love...even if not romantic love because I have no "special someone" in my life.

For a couple reasons though Valentine's Day is tough...

Three years ago, my baby shower for Lily was on February 13th. It was a Valentine's-themed shower, with hearts and pink galore! We had red-velvet cake, which is where we started the tradition of having red-velvet cake for Lily's birthday celebrations. Now, the cake and the holiday will forever remind me of my girl. It's simply bittersweet. Bitter because of how I miss her so and sweet because of the precious memory. I am very thankful for that happy and beautiful memory with her. I will always associate Valentine's Day with Lily now and will remember her baby shower around this day. I wrote a post before called Days Nobody Remembers, and the day of my shower is one of those days...those days that I will forever remember, even if nobody else does. There are days that will be etched into my heart and mind always.

Valentine's Day also falls in Luke's "Heaven Month," which makes me think of him.

I wish my two Valentines were here with me to smother with hugs and kisses. They are my Heavenly Valentines and I blow kisses to the sky, to Heaven.

It hurts to see all the pictures of everyone's sweet Valentine's in their special pink-and-red-with-hearts outfits...and to know my two children will never wear those outfits. Or make me a valentine with hearts and "mommy" scribbled across it.

On this day of love, I will celebrate still. Celebrate the love my Jesus has for me and my babies and it's because of this great love that I will see them again. Celebrate the love I have for Lily and Luke and will have forever and for always.

They are eternally loved.

They are eternally safe with Jesus.

They are eternally mine.

Thank you Catherine from Gabriel's Garden for the two beautiful images above.

My dear friend Laura sent me the sweetest, most thoughtful and beautiful homemade card for Valentine's Day. It made my day! Thank you, my friend! It's perfect with a flower for Lily "my little flower," and a butterfly which reminds me of Luke. I love it! On the inside, she wrote a sweet message of how she is remembering Luke this month. :)

Today has been special because I got to spend some of the day with Olivia Rose, the little girl I nanny for. She is already 6 months old! It was very sweet to be with her on her first Valentine's Day. It's such a blessing being her nanny. :) Here we are in our pink and red.

There was the most gorgeous pink sunset painting the sky on this Valentine's Day evening! What a sweet gift from Jesus. :)

My Valentine's plans consist of eating a red-velvet cupcake in honor of Lily, lighting a heart-shaped candle, and eating out at Red Lobster tomorrow! It's sort of a mixed-celebration for my half-birthday (which was on the 12th), for Valentine's Day, and in remembrance of Lily's shower. What special things do you have planned? I wish you a peaceful day if you have a Valentine in Heaven and a beautiful day as well if all your Valentines are here on earth. :)

This is the very special poem my mom wrote in honor of Lily to give to me for Valentine's Day in 2011. I like to share it each year. It brings me to tears each time I read it...

Valentine's Hearts

Catherine from The Sacred Seashore created these beautiful Valentine's Hearts in honor of Lily and Luke for Valentine's Day 2013 on Cabrillo Beach in Los Angeles, California.

L&L are my two Heavenly Valentine's and I love having their names written on beaches, so this is really special to have. :) Especially because Luke's Heaven month is February and Lily's baby shower was a Valentine's-themed shower.

I love all the different photos and that some have their names individually and some have their names together. Thank you so much, Catherine!
